The Penn Hills School District is proud to announce the hiring of James Eckels as its new Athletic Director. With a strong background in athletic leadership and student development, Eckels brings a wealth of experience and a clear vision for enhancing the student athlete experience.

Eckels most recently served as Athletics and Transportation Director at Mount Pleasant Area School District, where he led several initiatives to strengthen athletic programs and operations. His work included revising athletic handbooks and spectator guidelines, implementing improved safety and anti-bullying measures, expanding communication through social media and digital platforms, and hosting major athletic events. His leadership focused on organization, accessibility, and creating a positive environment for student athletes, coaches, and the community.

Prior to his time at Mount Pleasant, Eckels spent nearly a decade coaching at the collegiate level, including roles at Saint Vincent College and Mercyhurst University. Throughout his coaching career, he developed student athletes both on and off the field, contributing to record setting performances, conference recognition, and strong academic outcomes. His experience as a recruiting coordinator and academic support leader reflects his commitment to helping students succeed beyond athletics.

Eckels was drawn to Penn Hills by the district’s strong sense of pride and tradition. “Penn Hills has a proud tradition in its athletics programs,” he shared. “I have always had a great respect for the community.”

As he begins his new role, Eckels has identified several key priorities for his first year, including enhancing athletic facilities, building strong relationships with students, coaches, and community members, and continuously improving systems to maximize the overall student athlete experience.

He is also focused on supporting students beyond competition. Eckels looks forward to connecting with student athletes and serving as a resource outside of the classroom, whether that includes guidance on college recruitment, career pathways, health and wellness, or providing recommendations for scholarships and opportunities.

"I hope to get to meet many of our students in the Penn Hills PHamily," he said. "I would like to continue to not only show support for them at contests but possibly be a tool to help them pursue future goals."

When asked what success looks like under his leadership, Eckels emphasized a philosophy centered on growth and positivity. He encourages students to focus each day on what they learned, how they helped others, and how they found enjoyment in the process. He believes that fostering these values will not only lead to success in athletics, but also prepare students to become well-rounded, productive members of society.

"I think it is imperative that we utilize our co-curricular and extracurricular activities to further develop our students' minds and bodies. In my opinion, if we can learn something, help someone, and have fun daily, then we have had a great day," he said.

The Penn Hills School District is excited to welcome Mr. Eckels and looks forward to the leadership, energy, and commitment he will bring to the athletics program.
