Attendance

Every day, students are required to arrive at school on time. Except for illness or extreme family emergencies, all students under the age of seventeen are required to attend school. Truancy will be taken seriously and may lead to legal consequences. The Superintendent or designee is responsible for developing protocols for student attendance that will identify habitual truants, explore the causes of truant behavior, and arrange a Truancy Elimination Plan (TEP) meeting with the building Social Worker to address habitual truant behavior.

At Linton Middle School, students attending onsite are expected to arrive each day no later than 8:05 AM.

What happens if I'm late?

Students arriving past 8:05 AM are considered tardy. These students will be admitted to the building, but a parent or guardian must accompany the student into the building upon arrival. Students will obtain a late slip in order to be admitted to class. After 120 minutes past the start time, students will be admitted to the building. However, they will be considered unlawfully absent and will result in an unexcused absence.

I'm a synchronous student, what are the expectations regarding my attendance?

As a parent or guardian, how many excuses am I legally allowed to write?

A maximum of ten (10) days of cumulative lawful absences verified by Parent/Guardian notification may be permitted during a school year. All absences, including excused/approved absences, beyond ten (10) cumulative days require an official excuse from a physician, court, religious institution or other approved institution. Otherwise, the absence will be marked unexcused.

What is considered a reasonable cause for absence from school?

We are planning a family educational trip, what is the process?

Family educational trips must be pre-approved by the principal using the School District of Penn Hills Vacation Request Form. This completed form must be submitted to the building principal at least two weeks in advance of the requested beginning leave date. The approval or non-approval for this requested absence will be determined on the basis of the child’s attendance record, academic standing, and discipline record, in addition to the educational merit of the trip.

My student was legally absent from school, how is make-up work handled?

What happens if I am non-compliant with the compulsory attendance law?

The district will issue written notice to any parent/guardian who fails to comply with the compulsory attendance statue, following any proceeding brought under that statue. The school Social Worker shall inform the parent/guardian of his/her liability under law for the absence of the student and that further violation during the school term will be processed without notice.
